Heidi Jensen

Name: Heidi Nørgaard Jensen
Born:  1979
Where do you hunt?  I usually hunt with pointers, so in open fields in Denmark or, if possible, in the mountains in Norway.
What’s your favourite type of hunting? Hunting with pointers
What’s your favourite weapon? Side-by-side Beretta shotgun
Best hunting experience:  Hunting for partridges/grouse with my Irish setters.
Preferred Deerhunter product: The Sophie shirt is definitely my favourite – a shirt with a perfect fit made from quality fabric and with a good length. I also really like the Deerhunter cap – otherwise I don’t usually wear one.

More about Heidi

When did you first become interested in hunting/dog training?

I only obtained my hunting licence a year ago. My ambition was to become a good dog handler before I started taking lessons for the hunting licence. There are probably enough people wanting to shoot, but perhaps not that many who are good at training their hounds.

Do you have any good tips for training hounds?

Contact, contact, contact. Good contact and mutual respect between a dog and its handler is definitely one of the most important aspects of building a successful team.

How do you prepare for a hunt?

I make sure that I’m wearing the right clothes, and that I can put on or remove a layer or two depending on the weather. Then I check that my dog is where I want it – in terms of its training.

What has been your most challenging hunt?

Duck hunting – you have to get used to the darkness and be good at identifying the birds.

What’s your dream hunting destination – and why?

Grouse hunting in Ireland/Scotland with my Irish Setters.

What advice would you give a novice hunter?

Try your hand at as many different kinds of hunting as possible, and find out what motivates you most.
