They are very tough and cunning animals; Ian has already been stalking one particular animal for three days. The topography in Nduna is nothing short of incredible, you never know what species you could see next. Impala, blesbok and giraffes all inhabit this massive wilderness. It can be exciting to see so many animals in close proximity, but it can also make hunting even more of a challenge as there are so many eyes watching your every movement.

A unique hunting experience in South Africa

Ian’s plan of the day was to wait for the eland to begin feeding and then stalk through some thick bush into them, giving them strong cover and plenty of space to identify their ideal animal to harvest. The plan was successful and after getting within 110 yards of the bull, which was stood perfectly, Ian set up his sticks and readied his rifle. Unfortunately, another eland wondered into view, the shot was now unsafe to take. The sun started to set and the hunting session was over; it’s time to head back to the lodge. Although the end might have been disappointing, it had still been an amazing day in the wild.

Patience pays off
The sun started to set and the hunting session was over; it’s time to head back to the lodge. Although the end might have been disappointing, it had still been an amazing day in the wild. The next afternoon, Ian was against the clock only having a limited time of sunlight left. Thankfully Gavin has an extensive knowledge of these lands and it doesn’t take long to locate the herd of eland once again. However, by the time they had found the animals the sun had begun to set and a safe, clean shot was no longer available.

The following morning Ian’s hopes are still high and he’s ready to get right back out into the wild. They spot the herd of eland along the plain; who soon head straight into the bush. Knowing whereabouts they will reappear, Ian once again gets set up on his stick and patiently waits. It wasn’t long until the bull remerges followed by the two cows. Ian waited until the bull presented a safe, ethical shot and he calmly squeezed the trigger. The shot hit perfectly and the bull past within a few feet. Another incredible hunt in South Africa has come to an end and an impressive eland bull that will also supply 150 kilos of biltong for a local game farm.
